Guess who's the proud owner of a NEW BIKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Please join me as I

SCREEEEEEAAAAMMMM

and join me for a

WOO HOO!

insert happy victory dance here.

I would like to introduce you all to my new pride and joy:

Mr. Giant Defy 2

"Hi everyone nice to meet you. I don't have a name yet, but I am so excited to feel Julia's butt on me and take her for some thrilling rides"......

lol. I bet that is what is going through it's mind! hee hee!

I honestly had no intention of getting a bike yesterday, seeing as how I can't ride it yet. My cough is still killing me. But I have been looking at a bunch of bikes recently.... and well, one thing led to another, and BAM! New bike!

I have total helmet head. Don't judge

I purchased the bike from a local bike shop called Fastrack Bicycles. The owner of the shop Dave, and the guy helping me decide yesterday, has won 8 National Championships GOld Medals, and was even a mechanic to Lance Armstrong himself on the Tour de France! I felt confident that he knew his shit and would lead me to the right bike and fit! I mean... if he could fix LANCE up with a winning bike, I bet MINE would be just as baller! (or not, but it's fun to dream)

I also picked up some new cycling shoes: the Shimano SH-WM61

The great thing about these shoes is that I can also wear them for spin classes at the gym. Talk about killing two birds with one stone! :)

I also made sure to pick up an "emergency pack" including a spare tube, canister of C02, and other things I may need in case of a flat. I need to make sure to review the instructions before I head out! If anyone has tips, PLEASE! You are more than welcome to leave your words of wisdom. A beginner can never have too much sage advice ;)
and blue is my favorite color. a match made in heaven

I am actually quite surprised I did this. I am usually not so spontaneous when it comes to money. Frugal and Stingy are understatements when describing my spending habits. However....

I mean, look at the guy. He's handsome! How could I possibly resist a ride with this studly stud?

Though I did learn a lesson about ridiculously good looking studs: too much of a good thing can be bad. And I mean, terribly, raw, throbbing, aching pain. Yup. My vajayjay got a good old saddle sore. Ouch! I need to remember to always use protection with such a good looking ride :) (ie Body Glide)

haha. Who knew talking about bicycles could be so.... naughty sounding? Or maybe I am just a pervert.

Whatever the case may be, I am beyond excited for my throat and nether regions to heal so I can go for my maiden voyage. And now....... I can officially start training for triathlons! I have my eyes set for the Santa Barbara Triathlon in August..... Oooohh I can hardly wait!

yyyyyaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!! OMG I HAVE A BIKE NOW!!!!!!!!

breathe breathe breathe ;)
Definitely makes the fact that I am desperately sick feel a little less awful.

Do you have any cycling shorts you would recommend? I don't even know WHERE to start looking! I heard Pearl Izumi makes good shorts, but a quick Google search showed hundreds of choices! Woah there.... I would truly appreciate your honest opinions and reviews of cycling shorts. I trust the bloggers out there than all the sales people trying to get me to buy the most expensive pair! (And plus, most bike shop people are dudes. What do THEY know about vajayjay issues on the bike? haha)

I hope you all are having a Fantastic three day weekend. Though it is raining, and I can't breathe or run or bike, I am feeling quite happy :)

See you all on Tuesday!!!

  1. Whoa, that bike is hot! Awesome purchase. I have Pearl Izumi shorts since they seem to be the most popular. They make tri shorts and regular bike shorts in a variety of lengths. If you're just riding, stay away from the tri shorts. (The padding is much less.) I'd head to a sporting goods store/bike shop and just start trying stuff on. You'll get a feel for what's comfortable. And yes, they all feel like you're wearing a giant maxi pad. It's well worth it though. Going without isn't an option. Good luck!!

  2. Congrats! I bought my first bike this weekend too. Ha, if it's any consolation, it hurt my special places too on my first ride. Hope you enjoy the new guy. FWIW, I bought a Giordana bib for my cycle only days and will invest in some tri gear soon. Have fun!

  4. Aw, New Bike Day is the best day ever!!! I remember sitting on my new bike in the house that night glass of wine in hand celebrating, ha ha.

The best advice for changing a flat is practice hands-on changing a flat. Have someone guide you, but do it yourself!

Also, invest in a quality pair of cycling shorts (decent pad, feels comfy to you)... your crotch will thank you ;)

  8. Congrats Julia, that's so exciting! To tell you the truth, I rode my bike for MONTHS without any sort of biking shorts at all. I think it was good to do that because I sort of built up a 'tolerance', if you know what I mean. I love the tri shorts from De Soto and the tri/regular cycling shorts from Zoot. I have yet to try Pearl Izumis, but I also hear they're great. Enjoy!!

  9. It's so pretty! I love it! You are going to have SO MUCH FUN with that baby. And yes, I think anyone good enough for Lance is good enough for you. I wear pearl izumi shorts for cycling and TYR for tri gear. I love them both.

  10. Awwww yay!!! Do I see a Tri in your future??? I think I do! Congrats girl! Can't wait to hear more about this stud and all the riding... hee hee...

  11. Wellll, I know nothing about cycling, so I will not attempt to offer any advice here, but congrats on the new ride!

  12. Nice ride girl! Can you say triathlon?!?!! I wear Pearl Izumi, I find that they make the best shorts. Let me be the first to tell you NOT to skimp and go cheap when it comes to bike shorts. They can make or break a ride!

  13. Hammer Nutrition has some really good tri shorts they sell. The shorts are plastered with the Hammer logo, but they are Voler brand and all I wear now. Because they have the Hammer logo on them, they are cheaper too. Go back to your bike shop and get some lube there for your netherregion -- BodyGlide never does the job for me on the bike.

  16. How exciting to get a new bike!! I always want a new bike, but there are no good paths where I live and the road are a little dangerous. One day :-(

  17. Cool bike! I hope you feel better soon so you can take it out for a ride!

I have a couple bike skirts from a company called Shebeest that I really like. They also make normal bike shorts that I tried on and liked, but never actually got around to buying.

I went to a free bike maintenance class at my local REI and found it really helpful and informative for learning how to take care of my bike. If you have an REI nearby, it might be something to check out.
