Running milestones and shoe "review"

GOOD MORNING runners!
It is Monday once again, but hey, only 5 more days till the weekend!
Today marks the beginning of my marathon training. It's not really all that exciting though, cause today is my rest day. I will do a more thorough description of my plan tomorrow, when there's something to actually talk about.

On Friday, I did a 5 mile run which I hated. I was THISCLOSE to quitting at mile 1.5. I thought, if I just make it to 2.5 miles I can quit, but toughed it out for all planned 5 miles.

On Saturday, I did a 45 min swim. Swimming is so difficult to me! I really don't know how to get in a rhythm and breathe smoothly. Right now, each breathe feels like a battle. I think I'm gonna have to hit up YouTube for some swim lessons. Lol.

Saturday afternoon, we hit up the French Festival. Bonjour! It was a really fun festival with TONS of great bread, crepes, and of course, SNAILS! James tried escargot for the first time. It was my second time trying snails, and we both agreed that though the sauce was delish, we did NOT like the texture nor the idea that we were chewing snails. What are some of the wierdest things you've eaten? I've eaten moose, pig hooves, and pig ears, which are all kinda strange.

Here's me channeling my inner Mona Lisa:
And James enjoying some wine as his head gets chopped off by an overly smiley security guard:
Haha.

On Sunday, I hit my running milestone. I ran 10 miles! Well, it was actually 9.99 miles, but whatev! I've never run that much during training before, and outside of a race. I am very proud of myself for this accomplishment, and thankful for James for sticking out the entire distance with me. WOO! I felt good for most of the run. I was very surprised to discover that I was in a very limited amount of pain. My knees and hips took the ten miles surprisingly well. I think the post-run ibuprofen/ice/stretch combo helped a lot as well. I think another factor that helped is that we kept the pace nice and easy. My max heart rate was 173 or something. I usually run my entire run at above 170, so keeping it in the 150-160 BPM range helped tremendously.

It's hard to think that just a couple of months ago, I could barely run 6 miles! Yay for progress!

Another reason why my run went so well is becasue I had new shoes on! As I mentioned a while back, I won a $75 gift card to OnlineShoes.com from Steve. And I thought I'll jsut talk about them instead of writing about them, to spice things up a bit. So welcome to my first home made video! Please excuse the bushy hair/lack of make-up/lack of idea what on earth I was going to say!

Oh boy. Yeah its kinda embarrassing.... :)
Haha. Anyways, Muchos Gracias Steve and onlineshoes.com for my super fly new sneakers!!!!

Have a great day, everyone!

  2. Congrats on the milestone! Woohoo!

Great job sticking it for your 5 mile tempo run too. I find I can usually convince myself to run X more miles, then I can quit.. but you get there and you're like, "Come on! I can do 2 more!" :)

  4. Cute video! I just bought a pair of Mizunos a couple months ago and really like them. Before that I had been in Brooks for a few years.

Great job on the 10, you are making progress. Wait till things heat up in training.

When we were in Kazakhstan Matt tried horse and said it was good. I couldn't do it.

  5. Awesome job on putting in 15 miles on the new shoes! I was thinking of getting myself some Mizunos in the future, after I get a pair of Brooks, too many shoes to choose from!!

I think one of the weirdest things I've eaten on record is wild boar in Italy, and I ate some weird stuff in China that I don't even know what it was (one thing was definitely a hard boiled quail egg, reminds me of quail man from Doug)

  6. Congrats on the 10 miler and new shoes! :D I wish to run double digits soon.
Since moving to Japan, I have grown to love natto! Perfect protein source methinks.:P Of course it's normal food but it's an acquired taste for me.

  7. The first time I tried escargot, I loved the sauce but got a little queasy as I pictured the snails! After I got over the initial freak out, I loved them...but then again, anything doused in butter and garlic is good in my book ;)

I think the weirdest thing I've eaten was intestine - it was by accident when we were in China! I wanted to try this spicy noodle soup, but just said I wanted what the other woman got...omg, NOT COOL!!

    Hooray for new shoes!
